Here’s something I wish I knew at 22 years old.

That we’re all winging it.

I started running about three years ago. I mark the date when my friend Jonathan and I signed up for Fleet Feet in Columbus, Ohio. You know you’re serious about something when you join a club.

Here’s us at our first speed training with Fleet Feet.

I remember looking around at the experienced runners and thinking. “Well, I screwed up. I’m so far behind. I spent the last five years drinking too much beer, watching too much football, and playing too much golf. I’m going to puke everywhere and get laughed off the track.”

Then I talked to the other runners and learned the truth.

Everyone Has Shit to Deal With

Old age, Injury, addiction.

I met a woman who started running after an ugly divorce. Running became her coping mechanism. When I met her, she was training for her seventh Boston marathon.
